Jupiter, a pseudonym, began their winding journey in the jewelry industry with a bachelors degree in art from 2011-2015, with more than one focus in illustration, metalsmithing, and 3D modeling. After graduation, they spent about 3 years as an apprentice doing mostly basic repairs while balancing custom design work for their store owner. Hovering over the shoulders of the nearby master jewelers, they hungrily absorbed any knowledge they could, the way the jewelry industry has operated for millennia, transferring knowledge from master to apprentice, one generation to another. Over time, it was clear that their love of custom design was greater, and that moving off of the bench and fully into the world of 3D modeling was the path forward for themselves. Jupiter was then formally educated in 3D modeling and jewelry manufacturing, receiving a certification from the Gemological Institute of America in New York City after completing the Jewelry Design and Technology program in early 2022. From then on they worked for a handful of companies ranging from high-couture jewelry brands to bridal jewelry manufacturers. Now on their own, they seek to set a new standard of excellence in the jewelry CAD section of the industry for both private clients and jewelry industry professionals.
Over the length of this journey, Jupiter slowly formed their own style that can be described as organic, sculptural, and sometimes otherworldly. They are currently inspired by the movements of Romanticism and Neo-Romanticism. Romanticism portrayed emotions, the human experience, nature, and promoted a wandering imagination. Neo-Romanticism was an art movement beginning around the early 1900s that sought to highlight how rapid advancements in technology during the Industrial Revolution would distance us as humans from nature, an effect seen even more today with now extreme technologies like AI and the impact of social media. Their personal designs almost always include something from our natural world, a reminder that we should not forget nature and our own humanity, as we all navigate an increasingly complex and divided world. Influenced by art history, the gnarled hands of master jewelers held dear, and with respect for long-standing jewelry traditions and techniques, Jupiter seeks to marry the technology of 3D programs like Rhino with the human hands of jewelers and artists alike, that AI and technology alone will never ever be able to replicate.
About the Artist
What is a CAD file?
CAD, short for “computer aided design”, is the term jewelers use when describing the file needed to begin the process of modernized jewelry manufacturing. Once a design is decided on, a CAD technician creates a .stl file, or stereolithography file to be sent for printing and casting. The CAD technician is someone who should be knowledgeable in jewelry construction, requiring some light engineering skills, to create jewelry that will stand the test of time, while also maintaining workability once it reaches a jewelers desk for finishing. A very condensed summary of the entire custom process is detailed here, your personal jeweler may have slight variations to this process. The process of creating a custom piece of jewelry requires the expertise of many different people, in other words, “it takes a village”. Given that a client’s design choices and the resulting CAD file are at the start of this journey, it is extremely important that designs requested remain durable, and realistically achievable during the entire length of the process, and for years after in your possession. More information on how important it is to maintain the structural integrity of jewelry is detailed in the Policies page.
